Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Spring 2

Theme Learning Question:

Bright Lights, Big City: Countries, cities, towns and villages

Curriculum Coverage:

In Maths this half-term we will be continuing to look at multiplication and division. We will be looking at making equal groups of 2s, 5s and 10s and what the multiplication and division signs mean. We will build and draw arrays to help us write multiplication sentences, and we will understand division by amounts into different groups using equipment to help us. We will move on to looking at measurement and enjoying some practical sessions measuring length, mass, weight and capacity with appropriate measuring tools such as rulers, meter sticks, trundle wheels, scales and measuring cylinders.

In English, we will continue to revise our phonics. This term’s text is the chapter book, ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. We continue to learn to write in different styles, looking at non-chronological reports about different species of owls. The children will be learning more about using grammatical features in their writing. This will include the use of conjunctions to join clauses together to make longer sentences, e.g. the use of words such as ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘because’, ‘so’ and ‘or’.

In Geography, we will be looking at the differences between countries, counties, cities, towns and villages. We will use maps to identify the countries of the UK and identify the features of cities and villages. We will learn about the symbols used on maps.

In Science, we will be studying electricity and identifying where in the home we use electricity. We will look at how to use electrical items safely.

In RE, we will be looking at the Christian story of Holy Week – Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We will consider Christians' feelings at different points of Holy Week and how Easter is celebrated by Christians today.
